one.com makes you pay for nothing

Looking for a web host for your webpage? Choose wisely, and stay away from one.com unless you like paying for nothing.

Last year I bought a domain from one.com, hoping that I would use it for one of my creative projects. Sadly I never got the time to really use the domain, so when I recieved an e-mail from one.com support that it was time for a renewal of the hosting agreement, I contacted them and asked to just close the domain and web hosting. The next day I recieved information that cancelling web hosting was not possible by e-mail so I had to log in to do so. Sure enough, after logging in and clicking on the unsubscribe link the web hosting agreement was cancelled, almost a month before due date.

This was the 19th of April 2008. Then, at the 9th of May, I recieved an e-mail informing me that I had a charge outstanding at one.com, and that I had to pay 220 kroner (around U$ 43) for next years web hosting. I thought it was a mistake, and immediately wrote an e-mail explaining that my domain was cancelled and that I had recieved a confirmation that the domain was closing at the 13th of May 2008.

At the 12th of May I recieved a reply, stating that I owed one.com 220 kroner since I had not cancelled my hosting agreement 45 days prior to the expiration of the previous 12-month period.

I think one.com tricks their customers to pay for a 12-month period, and purposely do not warn their customers when the 45-day due date approaches. They only inform customers less that one month before the due date, forcing people to either continue their web hosting plan or to cancel it and still have to pay for a whole year.

In my opinion, this is unfair business practice, and one that should be changed. It’s unfair to avoid informing customers within reasonable time that their web hosting plan is due for renewal without possibility to cancel it. If you are looking for a cheap web host, look carefully at the agreement and see what your terms as a customer is. I will never use one.com again, and will reccommend all my friends and collegues to stay away from one.com until they change their business practice and stop screwing customers.

One.com – I hope you will enjoy my 220 kroner and hope your customers heed my warnings and take their business elsewhere.
